Tips for Optimizing the Flow of the Room
Feeling like one of your rooms just isn't flowing the way you want? Whether you're moving into a new home or refreshing an old one, proper space planing can make all the difference! Here are some quick tips to help you get started:
1. Start with a plan: Grab a layout of your room with measurements to get a clear visual before making any big purchases. Play around with furniture arrangements and think about how you want to use the space. This helps prevent wasting time and money by purchasing random pieces that ultimately are too big, too small or just don't fit in the space correctly.
2. What furniture are you keeping? Decide what you want to keep and what new pieces you need. Don't forget to measure existing items and use those measurements in your space planning. Plus, make sure and measure structural components like windows, fireplaces and doors. And remember to check which way the door swings to avoid any future mishaps!
3. Think about walkways: Aim for at least 3 fee of walkway around the perimeter of the space as well as the main walkway into the space. Pay attention to how you enter and exit the space...does it feel natural? if not, try rearranging your furniture or space planning your room in a different way to create a more convenient path.
4. Be flexible: Even with a plan, minor tweaks are often needed. Once your furniture is in place, feel free to adjust things. Let the room "talk" to you, it'll tell you if something feels off or needs to shift. Use your plan as a guideline for the overall placement but don't feel like you need to put things exactly to the inch where they are on your plan.
5. Don't forget finishing touches: Art, pillows, lamps and accessories complete the room but are often forgotten during the planning phase. Think 3D! Look at your space from your perspective, not just a birds eye view. Those little details make the room come alive!
