Storage With a Statement: Why the Hardest Working Piece in the Room Should Also Be One of the Most Beautiful

Storage is one of those things that every home needs, but somehow it’s usually one of the last things people get excited about.

When someone is designing a room, they’re thinking about the sofa, the dining table, the light fixture, the rug, maybe the artwork. Storage tends to become the practical decision at the end of the project. It’s the piece you have to buy because you need somewhere to put things.

But I think we’ve been looking at storage all wrong. Because storage is often one of the largest pieces in a room. Why not let it be one of the most beautiful too?

Every room has things that need a home. Extra blankets. Serving pieces that only come out during the holidays. Office supplies. Kids' toys. Board games. Dog treats. Electronics. Craft supplies. Seasonal décor. We all have things we need, but don’t necessarily want sitting out where everyone can see them every day.

Good storage creates calm.

There’s something about walking into a room where everything has a place. It doesn’t feel empty or overly minimal—it just feels peaceful. The room can breathe because your eye isn’t trying to process piles of "I'll put that away later." Instead, the things you want to showcase become the focus, and everything else quietly disappears behind beautiful doors and drawers.

And that's really the magic of great storage. It allows the beautiful things in your home to shine. But just because a piece is practical doesn’t mean it has to be plain. In fact, I think storage is one of the best opportunities in a room to make a statement.

Instead of choosing a basic cabinet that simply blends into the wall, look for a piece with personality. Maybe it’s a beautifully carved wood buffet that anchors your dining room. Maybe it’s a cabinet wrapped in grasscloth that brings incredible texture to the space. Maybe it’s a rich walnut console with oversized hardware, or a painted piece in a beautiful moss green or deep navy that immediately catches your eye when you walk into the room.

Storage can absolutely be the star.

And because these pieces are often larger than most of the furniture around them, they naturally have the visual weight to become a focal point.

We're also seeing so many beautiful materials being used in storage furniture right now. Fluted wood doors that play with light and shadow throughout the day. Reeded glass that partially hides what's inside while still creating visual interest. Warm oak with natural grain that becomes artwork all on its own. Rich stone tops that instantly elevate a cabinet from simply functional to something that feels custom. Metal details. Wrapped leather pulls. Sculptural hardware. The details have become just as important as what the cabinet actually stores.

Even the shape of storage furniture has evolved. Gone are the days where every cabinet was simply a rectangle with four doors. We're seeing curved corners that soften a room. Rounded edges that feel sculptural. Floating cabinets that make spaces feel lighter. Tall cabinets that draw your eye upward and make ceilings feel higher. The silhouette itself has become part of the design.

And storage isn't limited to one room anymore.

In a great room, a beautiful cabinet can hide games, electronics, puzzles, throws, and all the things that make everyday life happen while still keeping the room feeling polished. In a dining room, a buffet becomes home for serving dishes, linens, candles, and entertaining essentials while also creating the perfect surface for styling artwork, lamps, or florals. An entry cabinet can hide shoes, bags, dog leashes, and everything that seems to collect by the front door, making the first impression of your home feel welcoming instead of cluttered. Bedrooms benefit from storage too. Beautiful dressers, bedside chests, or accent cabinets provide places to tuck away clothing, extra bedding, books, and personal items while adding warmth and character to the room. Even bathrooms are getting more thoughtful storage. Instead of simply adding shelving, we're seeing beautiful furniture-inspired vanities and linen cabinets that make the room feel designed rather than purely functional.

One thing I always encourage clients to think about is what they’re actually storing. The answer often helps determine the best piece.

If you're constantly grabbing blankets while watching movies, maybe a cabinet near the sofa makes more sense than one across the room. If you entertain often, keep serving pieces close to the dining table. If the kids play games every evening, make it easy for them to put everything away without having to carry it through the house.

The best storage isn't just beautiful. It's convenient.

Because if something is difficult to put away, chances are it won't get put away very often.

And while we're talking about making life easier, don't underestimate the power of hidden storage. Some of my favorite pieces are the ones that surprise you. Coffee tables with drawers. Ottomans that lift open. Benches with storage underneath. Beds with hidden compartments. They work twice as hard without taking up any additional space, which is especially valuable in smaller homes or multipurpose rooms.

I also love mixing open and closed storage together. Open shelving gives you a place to display books, pottery, family photos, or collected treasures that tell your story. Closed storage quietly hides everything else. Together, they create balance. Your home feels personal without feeling cluttered.

Because not everything deserves to be on display. The things that matter most should have room to stand out.

At the end of the day, storage shouldn't feel like an afterthought. It should feel like an opportunity. An opportunity to add craftsmanship. Beautiful materials. Interesting textures. A bold finish. A unique silhouette. A piece that works incredibly hard every single day while still making people stop and say, "I love that cabinet."

Because every room needs storage. But there's no rule that says storage has to be boring.
