Moving into a New Home? Here’s How to Stay Sane and Design a Space You Love
Tips for Moving and Resetting Your New Home—Without Losing Your Mind
Moving into a new home is exciting—but let’s be honest, it can also feel totally overwhelming. Between logistics, emotions, and what feels like a never-ending tower of boxes, it's easy to feel like your dream home is miles away.
As interior designers who work with clients all across Utah, we see this stage all the time: full of excitement, slightly stressed, and wondering, “How do I make this feel like home—without the chaos?”
Here are some of our tried-and-true home moving and decorating tips to help you stay grounded, organized, and maybe even a little inspired during your move.
1. Declutter While You Pack—Not After You Move
Golden rule alert: Don’t bring stuff into your new home that you don’t want, need, or love.
As you pack, ask yourself:
-
Have I used or touched this in the last six months? (Seasonal stuff gets a pass.)
-
Does this item have real sentimental value?
If the answer is “no” to both—donate it, sell it, or give it away.
And for those sentimental-but-unused items? Give them a proper home. Grab some nice storage bins, label them “Memories,” and plan for them to go straight into storage in the new place.
Pro Tip: Decluttering after the move is way harder. When you're mid-unpacking, decision fatigue is real. Do your future self a favor—edit now, breathe easier later.
2. Be Honest About the Furniture You’re Bringing
Moving is the perfect opportunity to reassess your furniture and decor. Ask:
-
Does this work with the style and layout of my new home?
-
Do I actually like it—or am I keeping it out of guilt/habit?
-
Is it in good shape?
If you’re unsure, consider this: bringing pieces you don’t love into your new home just delays the process of getting what you really want. Empty rooms are okay. (We promise. Folding chairs can be chic… for a week.)
Design Mindset: Space is potential. Don't fill it just to fill it—make room for something better.
3. Build a Vision Board (Or Pinterest Board, Or Photo Album)
Before you shop or even unpack, start collecting inspiration. Create a folder on your phone, Pinterest board, or even a physical mood board with magazine clippings—whatever works.
The goal? Focus on how you want your new home to feel.
-
Does your inspiration match the bones of your new house?
-
Does it reflect your personal style?
If not, that’s where a designer can help. We love helping clients figure out how to blend a home’s architecture with the aesthetic they actually love. A solid vision board helps turn good taste into a real plan.
Bonus: Use That Vision to Guide Your Purchases
Your mood board is now your design compass. Whether you're picking a sofa, an entry rug, or the perfect pendant light—compare it to your vision.
This helps you avoid the “I love this individually but it doesn’t work together” problem. Each choice becomes part of a thoughtful, cohesive space. And just like that—your new home starts to feel like you.
Welcome Home—You’ve Got This
Moving is a lot. But it’s also a fresh start—a chance to be intentional about what comes with you into this next chapter of life.
So:
-
Declutter like a pro
-
Let go of what no longer serves you
-
Dream big about what you want your space to feel like
