Celebrating Mother’s Day at Home: Waffles, Gratitude, and the Heart of Design

There’s something so special about Mother’s Day. It’s a gentle reminder to pause, celebrate the women who shaped us, and create space — both physically and emotionally — for love, care, and connection.

Whether you’re spending the day with your mom, mother figure, or soaking in the joy of motherhood yourself, Mother’s Day is about honoring the deep, often unseen work that goes into nurturing a life and a home.

A Little Backstory on Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day as we know it began in the early 1900s when Anna Jarvis campaigned to create a national holiday in honor of mothers — a tribute to the compassion, strength, and quiet dedication they bring to the world. While it’s become a popular celebration, at its core, it’s really about gratitude. About recognizing the people who make a house feel like home, with every hug, every act of care, and every detail thought through with love.

Why Home Matters

For many of us, “mom” and “home” are deeply connected. It’s in the cozy breakfasts, the warmth of shared traditions, the soft lighting in the living room she always insisted on, the throw blanket that smells just like her. Moms are often the first interior designers in our lives — creating beauty, comfort, and order in a way that feels effortless but is anything but.

That’s why, as designers, we know that home isn’t just about style. It’s about feeling. And the most memorable spaces are the ones that reflect love, memory, and care — all things that moms know instinctively.

A Sweet Start: Homemade Waffles for Mom

Whether you’re planning breakfast in bed or a slow brunch around the table, waffles are a classic, cozy treat — just the right mix of comforting and celebratory. We would like to share a recipe from our owner and found, Shayne Hemsley. These waffles are like nothing you've ever tasted.

Shayne Hemsley's Secret Waffle Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups flour

  • Tablespoon of baking powder

  • 2 teaspoons sugar

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • 1/2 cup butter

  • 3 large eggs

  • 1 tablespoon of vanilla

  • 2 cups milk

Optional Add-ins:
Blueberries, mini chocolate chips, or lemon zest for a fun twist

Toppings We Love:
Fresh berries, whipped cream, maple syrup, and powdered sugar.

Directions:

  1. Preheat your waffle iron.

  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the dry ingredients.

  3. In a separate bowl, warm butter and milk until all is melted.

  4. Mix the eggs until they are thick.
  5. Add vanilla to eggs
  6. Combine all wet ingredients.
  7. Pour wet ingredients into the dry and stir until just combined. (don't over mix, small lumps are okay!)
  8. Lightly grease the waffle iron and cook according to manufacturer’s instructions.

Pro tip: Serve waffles on your prettiest plates and eat them somewhere sun-drenched if possible. Ambiance makes it taste even better.

Design Tip: Celebrate with Intention

Want to bring that Mother’s Day feeling into your space all year long? Think about how you can layer in warmth, softness, and a little nostalgia:

  • Add framed family photos or heirloom pieces to your shelves or gallery walls.

  • Use soft textiles — like linen, velvet, or woven throws — to evoke comfort.

  • Bring in florals (fresh or dried!) to infuse life and joy into your rooms.

  • Light a candle with a scent that reminds you of home — baking, fresh flowers, or clean laundry.

These aren’t just aesthetic choices — they’re emotional ones. And they help turn a house into a sanctuary.

However You Celebrate…

Whether Mother’s Day for you is joyful, quiet, reflective, or all of the above — we hope your space holds you with love. And if you’re dreaming of a home that feels more like you (or more like the comforting spaces you grew up in), we’d love to help you design it.

From meaningful layouts to thoughtful layers, it’s always about more than just furniture — it’s about how it feels.

Happy Mother’s Day, from our home to yours.
