How to Decide Where to Put Your Bed: Bedroom Layout Tips That Work
When setting up a bedroom, one of the first—and most important—decisions you’ll make is where to place your bed. It sounds simple, but the wall you choose impacts everything from the room’s flow and function to how restful and balanced the space feels.
While there’s no single “perfect” wall that works for every room, there are a few tried-and-true bedroom layout tips that can help you decide.
1. Check the Electrical Outlets
It might seem obvious, but I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen a gorgeous bedroom setup… with cords stretched awkwardly across the floor because the outlets are in the wrong place.
Your bed placement should make it easy to plug in lamps, phone chargers, alarm clocks, or any bedside electronics. Bonus points if there are outlets on both sides of the bed—a small detail that makes daily life much more convenient.
2. Consider the Windows
Natural light is a wonderful thing, but windows can complicate bed placement. Positioning the bed directly under a window might lead to drafts, earlier-than-you’d-like morning light, or awkward curtain situations.
For most bedrooms—especially guest rooms or secondary bedrooms—a solid wall with no windows makes the best backdrop for the bed. It keeps the space balanced, helps your headboard feel anchored, and allows for better control over light and privacy.
3. Think About the Entrance and Room Flow
When you walk into the room, the bed should feel welcoming—not hidden away or blocking walkways. In smaller or secondary bedrooms, the best bed placement is often directly across from the door or at a slight angle (kitty-corner) so it becomes the natural focal point as soon as you enter.
This layout also keeps traffic flow smooth and avoids awkward squeezes around furniture.
4. Get Creative in Primary Bedrooms
Primary bedrooms often give you more square footage to work with, which opens up your options. It’s common for the door to enter from the side of the bed, creating a walkway between the door and bed that leads to a closet or ensuite bathroom.
This layout can feel more private and intentional, and it allows you to arrange additional furniture—like dressers, chairs, or benches—without disrupting the flow.
Find the Perfect Bed Placement for Your Space
At the end of the day, there’s no “one-size-fits-all” rule. The best bedroom layout comes from balancing function, comfort, and style. If you start by thinking about outlet access, window placement, and traffic flow, you’ll almost always land on a setup that feels just right.
