Color, Thoughtfully: A Designer’s Guide to Bringing Color Into Your Home

Part 5: Lighting That Steals the Show
Lighting is one of the most overlooked opportunities in design. It’s often treated as something purely functional, something you pick at the end. Sometimes it becomes something that just needs to “work.” But in reality, lighting has the ability to completely transform a space, not just in how it looks, but in how it feels.
And when you start thinking about lighting as a place to introduce color, everything shifts.

More Than Just Light
Lighting isn’t just about brightness. It’s about atmosphere, mood, and experience. And the fixture itself? That’s your chance to make a statement.
Instead of blending into the background, lighting can become a focal point in the room. Let it be something that draws the eye and adds personality in a way that feels effortless. Color plays a huge role in that.

Bringing Color Through the Fixture Itself
There are so many ways to introduce color through lighting, and what’s exciting is how versatile it can be. It might come through colored glass, where the tone subtly shifts depending on whether the light is on or off. It might show up in a painted metal finish or a wood detail that adds warmth and contrast. Sometimes it’s bold and obvious like a fixture that becomes the centerpiece of the room. Other times, it’s quieter, supporting the rest of the space while still adding depth and interest. Either way, it’s intentional. And it’s something people notice.

Two Looks in One
One of the most unique things about lighting is that it changes. During the day, a fixture might read one way, showing its true material, color, and form. But at night, when the light is on, it takes on a completely different presence. The glow shifts. The color softens or intensifies. The entire mood of the space changes. It’s almost like getting two design elements in one.
And when you use that to your advantage, lighting becomes more than just a fixture, it becomes part of the experience of the room.

Supporting or Stealing the Show
Lighting has the ability to play different roles depending on what the space needs. In some rooms, it’s meant to support, adding just enough color and interest to complement everything else without overpowering it. In others, it’s the star. A bold fixture can anchor a dining room, define an entry, or completely transform a kitchen island. It becomes the piece that ties everything together. And because lighting sits above the space, it naturally draws attention without competing with furniture or other elements.

A Natural Layer in the Design
What makes lighting such a great place for color is how naturally it fits into the room. It doesn’t feel forced. It doesn’t feel like an extra layer that was added on later. It’s already there, because it's necessary . Thihs makes it the perfect opportunity to introduce something a little more thoughtful.

Seeing Your Space Differently
Once you start looking at lighting this way, it changes how you approach it. Instead of asking, “What light do I need here?” you start asking, “What can this light do for the room?” "How can it add warmth?" "How can it bring in color?" "How can it enhance everything else happening in the space?"
And that’s when lighting goes from an afterthought to one of the most impactful elements in the room.

As we continue through this series, we’re layering color in ways that feel natural, intentional, and personal.
And next, we’re moving into a place where color is already expected, but often underutilized.
Stay tuned for the next part, where we’ll talk about bringing color into the bones of your home through architectural elements.
