Color, Thoughtfully: A Designer’s Guide to Bringing Color Into Your Home

Part 3: The Power of Accessories
If built-ins are a confident first step and stone is a grounded, natural layer… accessories are where things start to feel fun. This is where color becomes flexible, personal and easy to explore.
And for a lot of people, this is the best place to start. Because bringing color in through accessories doesn’t require a big commitment. It doesn’t require construction, installation, or a long-term decision. It’s something you can try, adjust, swap out, and evolve over time. It gives you the freedom to figure out what you actually love.
Color Without the Commitment
One of the biggest hesitations people have with color is the fear of getting it wrong. What if you don’t like it in a year? What if it feels too bold? What if it doesn’t work with everything else? Accessories remove that pressure.
You can introduce color through pieces like vases, artwork, pillows, throws, florals, or lamps. These are all things that can be easily updated if your taste shifts or the season changes. It allows you to experiment. Now you can try a color you’ve been drawn to without having to fully commit your entire room to it.
And sometimes, that’s all you need to build confidence.

Letting Creativity Take the Lead
Accessories are also where your personality really starts to show up. This is where you can bring in colors that mean something to you. Maybe it’s a tone that reminds you of a place you love. Maybe it’s a color that simply makes you happy when you see it. There’s no strict rule here. You can go subtle with soft layers of color that blend into the space, or you can introduce a pop that draws the eye and creates a focal point. Both approaches work, it just depends on how you want the room to feel.
And because these pieces are smaller, you can layer them. A pillow that picks up a tone from a piece of artwork. A vase that ties into the color of a throw. A lamp that adds just a hint of contrast. It starts to create a rhythm in the room.
One of the best things about using accessories for color is how easily they can change. If you love decorating for different seasons or holidays, this is where you can really have fun. You can bring in lighter, brighter tones in the spring and summer, then shift into warmer, richer colors as the seasons change. It keeps your home feeling fresh and evolving. It gives you a way to enjoy color without feeling locked into one direction.
A Layer That Completes the Room
Accessories are often the final layer in a space — the part that takes a room from “it looks good” to “it feels finished.” But they’re also incredibly important. Without them, a room can feel a little flat or incomplete. With them, it gains depth, personality, and warmth. And when color is introduced at this level, it tends to feel more natural. More lived in. More reflective of the people who actually use the space.
A Simple Way to Start
If you’ve been unsure about adding color to your home, this is your starting point. It’s low pressure. It’s flexible. And it allows you to build your confidence as you go. You don’t have
to get it perfect the first time. You just have to start.

And as you get more comfortable with color in these smaller, more flexible ways, you might find yourself ready to take it a step further. Because the next layer in this series is where color becomes even more personal and a little more unexpected.
Stay tuned for the next part, where we’ll talk about bringing color into one of the most overlooked (and most fun) spaces in the home… your workspace.
