Color, Thoughtfully: A Designer’s Guide to Bringing Color Into Your Home

Part 2: Letting Stone Do the Talking
Color doesn’t always have to come from paint. Sometimes the most beautiful, layered, and timeless color in a home comes from something much more natural. Something that already exists, already has depth, already has movement built into it.
Stone.
In the last few years, we’ve seen a huge shift in how stone is being used in design. It’s no longer just countertops and flooring. It’s becoming a feature, a statement, and in many cases, the moment in a room where everything comes together. And one of the reasons designers love it so much is because of the way it brings in color without ever feeling artificial.
Color That Feels Organic
There’s something about stone that paint just can’t replicate. The variation, the veining, the subtle shifts in tone, it all works together to create color that feels alive. You’re not looking at one flat shade, you’re seeing layers. Movement. Depth. And because of that, it blends so effortlessly into a space.
You might have a slab that carries soft greys, warm creams, and hints of taupe. Or go more bold with natural blues, greens and rusts. Can also bring in the moody vibe with blacks, dark greys and rich browns. All of those colors start to influence everything around it: the furniture, the lighting, the overall mood of the room.
It’s color, but it’s quiet. It’s expressive, but still grounded.

Beyond the Countertop
One of the most exciting things we see is how creative we’re getting with where stone shows up in a home. We’re seeing stone used in ways that feel more architectural and intentional. Fireplace surrounds that stretch from floor to ceiling. Backsplashes that become full feature walls. Stone-wrapped columns, shelving details, even integrated elements that feel almost sculptural. And when you start using stone in these ways, it stops being just a surface. It becomes a design element.
Lighting Changes Everything
If there’s one thing that truly brings stone to life, it’s lighting. The way light interacts with stone is what makes it so special. Whether it’s natural light moving across it throughout the day or intentional lighting placed to highlight it, the effect is always a little different and always beautiful.
Backlighting can create a soft glow that makes the stone feel almost translucent. Directional lighting can emphasize texture and veining, pulling out details you might not even notice at first glance.
It’s one of those elements that changes depending on the time of day, which makes the space feel dynamic and alive.
A Natural Fit for Utah Living
Here in Utah, this approach to color feels especially right. We’re surrounded by natural materials like stone, mountains, and landscapes that shift in tone depending on the light and the season. Bringing that same idea into the home creates a connection that feels effortless. It becomes not forced or overly designed. It just works.
And that’s what makes stone such a powerful way to introduce color. It reflects what’s already happening outside and brings it into the space in a way that feels authentic.
Color That Lasts
Another reason we love using stone for color is that it doesn’t feel temporary. Trends will come and go, but natural materials have a way of staying relevant. They don’t feel dated because they were never trying to be trendy in the first place. They just are what they are. And when color is introduced through something that timeless, it gives the entire space a sense of longevity.
A Layer, Not the Whole Story
Just like with built-ins, stone is one layer in how we think about color. It doesn’t have to do everything. It doesn’t have to carry the whole room. But when it’s used intentionally, it can set the tone in a way that feels effortless and elevated. It becomes the foundation that everything else builds from.

And that’s where this series really starts to come together.
Because once you have those foundational elements, like built-ins and stone, the next step is where things start to get a little more flexible, a little more playful, and a lot more personal.
Stay tuned for the next part in our series, where we’ll talk about one of the easiest and most approachable ways to bring color into your home… accessories.
